I Tried to Eat It

Karen | travel | Friday, 22 February 2008

chef1.jpgsushi.jpg The first night at Stacy’s she took us to a hibachi grill. They served sushi which our daughter loves. I know that sushi has good ingredients in each little rolled up ball but I cannot get past the seaweed it is wrapped in. I tried but I gagged and rather than throw up, I spit it into my napkin. Sorry. I am not cool.

Protect Your Valuable Electronic Devices

Karen | travel | Friday, 22 February 2008

When we travel we fill our car to the brim. We don’t like to be without anything. It can cause a problem when we get in and out of the car in a hurry. There have been times when our cameras and phones have been tossed without concern for their stability. We shouldn’t treat our things that way but we do. InvisibleSHIELD keeps the faces of our screens from being damaged when we are careless. The following invisibleSHIELD video shows how much abuse the invisibleSHIELD can withstand. It is amazing.

Welcome to Florida

Karen | travel | Friday, 22 February 2008

When we crossed the border from Georgia into Florida, we were pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful welcome center. I should say that I was surprised. Hubby had been to one such welcome center before.

Hubby picked up a free Florida road map and we each drank a little cup of fresh orange juice. It was delicious. The center was very clean and well attended. Many folks were letting their pets stretch their legs in the animal portions of the landscaping that was reserved especially for them. It was a nice place to start enjoying beautiful Florida.

Need a Little Romance?

Karen | travel | Thursday, 21 February 2008

romance.jpgI have been trying to think what I would consider our most romantic getaway. I know that what comes to mind is our trip to Hawaii for our 25th wedding anniversary. I will always remember that special trip. There are so many things to do that I would recommend guidance through Trusted Tours. They are experienced in getting you to the best places. I loved the night we went to a luau and saw the hula dancers dancing against an orange sunset. Ah, that was beautiful.

No matter where we go, it is always romantic to me to be away from my job and work here at home, as long as I am with my hubby. We are at that point, after being married for over 30 years, of just being together and comfortable without having to say a word. So, whether we are taking in New York City tours, which were romantic and fun because I got my picture taken outside of Tiffany’s Jewelry Store or we want to go somewhere peaceful and quiet, romance means seeing new things with my husband.

Trusted Tours has many vacation ideas that will bring out the romantic side of you and your honey. Just look at my picture and you will see that just being together while touring New York City will bring you closer together as you experience the sights and smells of the bustling city. Sign up for Trusted Tours newsletter so you don’t miss any exciting travel news. Oh, and when you sign up for their newsletter you will have a chance of winning a Canon PowerShot digital camera. A Counter Clockwise Route

Karen | attractions,travel | Thursday, 21 February 2008

williamwhitley.jpgOn our travel route to Florida, I saw many road signs directing visitors to historical sites. One of these days we will have time to venture off our path to check some of those sites. One such site was the The William Whitley House, also known as Sportsman’s Hill. This beautiful home stands today as a monument to pioneer ingenuity and resourcefulness. It was the first brick home and circular racetrack built west of the Alleghany Mountains, completed in 1794 by William Whitley and his wife Esther. Dubbed the “Guardian of Wilderness Road,” the house was a gathering spot for early Kentuckians, including George Rogers Clark and Daniel Boone. The House Museum is furnished with original pieces from the period. If you visit this historic setting, a tour guide will share the history of the house and the Whitley family.

During the 1780s and 1790s, the Whitleys felt secure enough to build the brick home and a circular racetrack, and held race meetings each autumn. The track was unique in the nation because it was the first circular design and was built of clay instead of using turf. It is felt that the American practice of racing counter-clockwise began at this track, in response to anti-British feeling at the time. The British raced in a clockwise direction. See, you learn something new everyday!

IKEA Adventure

Karen | attractions,travel | Thursday, 21 February 2008

bookcase.jpgWhile we were in Florida we went to an IKEA store. Stacy needed something to hold her gazillion books. We found a very nice cabinet with glass doors, see the picture, that holds quite a few of her books. Not all of them fit, but many of them did, so it is a start. That girl reads books!

We were shocked, upon our arrival at the IKEA in Orlando, to find that there was absolutely nowhere to park. We ended up on the back forty in the grass. That was ok though because after walking at Epcot the day before, I wanted to keep up with my walking. So, walk we did. Have you ever been to an IKEA? They are huge. It felt as if we were cattle being ushered through the aisles. It was a feat in itself to go into an area to look at anything. I risked my life at one point to look a the cutest little table for Stacy’s puzzle put-together needs.

We wrote down the numbers of what Stacy picked to buy and went to the section where we were to put the boxes on our cart. The bookcase we wanted was not there. Luckily, there was a computer that when you typed in the item you were looking for it told you which aisle and section it was supposed to be in. The computer had the correct information.

Off we went to the cashier to pay for our purchase. Oh my. Let me admit that I went to the snack bar, purchased a yummy yogurt and found a place to sit down. I think that there were 20 cash register stations and they all had lines at least five people deep. Do you hear the cash register? Ka Ching!

It was like going through an obstacle course to maneuver our cart to where Lynn was bringing the car. We made it without any injuries to our purchase or any human being. It was close though on the human part. People do not watch where they are going!

We watched as two young girls tried to fit a huge box into their little Honda Accord. Push and pull as much as they could, that box would not go in. I have no idea what they ended up doing but it was entertaining.

We loaded up the car and headed home to the mall. We had a teeny tiny bit of energy left and we felt it was best used up at the mall. Shop til you Drop!

Nice Clean Cars

Karen | Important | Monday, 18 February 2008

Something I have noticed while visiting Florida, is that everyone drives new cars. Perhaps, because of the nice weather here, they all just look new. Our cars, in Indiana, take a beating with all the ice and snow we deal with every winter.

If I could, I would keep my car forever. I hate buying new cars. It usually involves a migraine. Do you like to work out car buying deals? Not me, as I have had a few crazy experiences with condenscending salesmen over the years. Have you had a bad car buying experience? I would love to hear about it.

The whole experience of buying a car can be a pleasant experience when you use a Car Buying Concierge. The service sounds like my cup of tea. It helps people like me, get throught the negotiating process and buying process without the usual migraine.

CARCHEX is the wonderful genius behind the Concierge idea. They know how much easier having a Concierge who acts as a car buying agent for me is going to make buying a new or used car so much easier. By using them, I am sure to get the best deal on not only the price but on my trade-in value and financial figures too. That is the part where I always get confused. I think this is going to be great.

Woody’s Barbecue

Karen | travel | Thursday, 14 February 2008

OMG!!! We just finished eating lunch at Woody’s BBQ in Macclenny, Florida, and all I can say is, OINK OINK. I am so full. I had pulled pork on a toasted garlic bun, boiled squash and blackeyed peas. I was trying to order southern types of sides and they were wonderful. The blackeyed peas were cooked in something that gave them a wondrful flavor. They had little bits of ham and onions in them also. There was a huge refrigerated case full of homemade pies and cakes. I could tell they were homemade because of the way they were ‘not” perfect. Drew, have you been to this place?

Kentucky Winery

Karen | attractions | Wednesday, 13 February 2008

We just passed a barn that normally would have had one of those Mailpouch Tobacco advertisements on it. It looked like the perfect spot for one. Surprisingly, it had a huge quilt block painted on it’s side. It was painted in beautiful yellows and reds. My mom would like to have a quilt block painted on the side of her little storage barn. I hope we can get that done this summer. I am more inspired now.

We went through Richmond, Kentucky a few hours ago. I saw a sign for the Acres of Land Winery. When I think of Kentucky, I think of horses and not wine. The Acres of Land Winery has been a stable business since 1998.

Acres of Land Winery is located on a 400 acre family farm purchased by Russell & Willie Mae Land in the 1940′s. The farm’s main crop of burley tobacco sustained the growth of the farm for over 50 years.

With the decline of burley tobacco quota and the death of Russell Land in 1998, Lowell & Katherine began to diversify into the wine industry. The agritainment business became Acres of Land Winery.

We Take Short Breaks

Karen | travel | Monday, 11 February 2008

Hubby and I enjoy our short road trips. It is too hard to be away from our business for longer periods of time. It gets too expensive to think of the sales we might miss while we are away. Someday we will be able to retire and not have to think about business. For now, we are enjoying small road trips that take us away for three or four days at a time.

Our lack of time has endeared me to a wonderful service at www.minibreaks.com. They cater to our short breaks. MiniBreaks has over 36,000 hotels, inns and guest houses to choose from that cater to us short break people. That means that we get the savings breaks that the extended stay visitors are always getting. They actually love us short break people. I was looking at their weekend breaks packages and found an interesting place to visit. I see that weekend breaks in York even offers my favorite way to spend the night. I absolutely love staying in a bed and breakfast. The description they give says, “The best room that we have, very grand, situated in the first floor bay window of the original house.” That sounds heavenly. MiniBreaks offer luxury breaks, spa breaks, weekend breaks, city breaks and walking breaks. There is something for everyone, including us short break people.
