When we visited North Carolina last summer, we were delighted to have the opportunity to visit the Hatteras Light House.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest in the nation and famous symbol of North Carolina. The lighthouse site houses a visitors center that is open throughout the year and houses displays on the island’s maritime history. Pictures do not do it justice. When you stand next to it you will feel dwarfed. At least, that is how I felt. The beacon from the light can be seen some 20-miles out to sea and has warned sailors for more than 100 years of the treacherous Diamond Shoals, the shallow sandbars which extend some 14 miles out into the ocean off Cape Hatteras. A story tells how the lighthouse was supposed to be painted in diamond colorations but that they painter got his plans mixed up. Cape Lookout received the diamond pattern and the Hatteras Lighthouse was painted in winding stripes. It is often referred to as the big barber pole.
Does anyone know where the airport is in Louisville? We will be headed south this week and will pick up my sister on the way. She is flying into the Louisville airport. It is going to be fun to have my mom with her three daughters for a few days. We get pretty goofy. Oh, my daughter will be driving up from Florida so we are sure to have some silly moments.
We may end up fighting over places to sleep. When the kids were younger we could have them sleep on the floor. Their stiff muscles recovered quickly. Now that we are all a little older we appreciate a good bed. Spacify is a great source for contemporary styles of bedroom sets. I am in love with their daybeds that let you use your room for other tasks beside sleeping. Spacify has a wide selection of bedroom furniture. You can see what they have to offer in the latest designs and patterns. Elegant bedroom sets are easy to see when you utilize Spacify’s easy to use website. The quality of furniture at Spacify is the best so you know you will get your moneys worth when purchasing from them. I love all the beautiful patterns from which to choose. They don’t just offer bedroom sets. They have matching armoires, dressers, retro chaise lounge, and mirrors that are designed exotically to match the modern style.
Oh my! Get me thinking about furniture and I get carried away. Back to our trip. We will be sewing and will need to move the beds out of our way. Who knows, if we get involved with sewing, we may not take time to sleep!
I just finished watching Discovery Channel’s Dirtiest Jobs. The show featured Clydesdale horses and the dirtiest jobs on Mackinaw Island. It was fun to see the sites from a different view. I have always wanted to go to Mackinaw Island.
I didn’t realize the island uses Clydesdale horses for many jobs.
Here are a few facts about Clydesdales:
* The full-grown Clydesdale should stand 18 hands (about 6 feet) at the shoulder and weigh between 2,000 and 2,300 pounds.
* The ideal horse is bay in color, has a blaze of white on its face, a black mane and black tail.
* Most important, the Clydesdale will have white feathering on all four legs and feet.
* All hitch horses are geldings, characterized by their even temperament and stronger, more natural draft horse appearance.
Clydesdale horses are often associated with the Budweiser Clydesdale Stables in Missouri. Grant’s Farm, where up to 15 foals are born each year. Grant’s Farm is proud to be one of the breeding operations for the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales. The Budweiser Clydesdales are the beverage industry’s most recognizable mascots, and you can also meet these famous horses by visiting the Clydesdale Hamlet at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Clydesdale teams are often competing in worldwide driving championships.
With summer approaching and automobile gas prices high, people are looking for cheap air fare. That means that a lot of people are booking flights. With summer comes the old over booked flight problem we have fear. Who doesn’t sit and worry while waiting for a flight. I never feel secure until the plane has pulled away from the building.
If you find that you have been bumped from a flight, you need to know what to expect. You may be offered a voucher to use on another flight. Check the voucher for terms. On many vouchers the expiration date is from the book by date not a fly by date. Sometimes round trip tickets are offered to bumped passengers. See if the airline will offer a credit instead. Credit is better than being offered tickets because you can split the credit and use it on different flights. It is best to check things out and know your options.
With the price of fuel increasing every day, travelers are opting to fly or take a train to their destination. I have no intention of giving up my travel plans because the oil companies are greedy, do you? I plan to search for cheap airline tickets and then rent a car when I arrive at my destination. Besides, it is smarter to put the wear and tear on the rental provider’s car rather than mine. We like to vacation at the beach. I cringe to think of having all that sand in my car. It is so much easier to let the rental agency take care of the mess. Advantage.com offers special rates that are so good it is crazy not to use a car rental service. Check out the special offers at http://www.advantage.com/. You will save money that you can spend at Wikki Watchi instead.
This has nothing to do with travel, which is what I write about on this blog, but it is important. Did you know that 35 million Americans are hungry or living on the brink of hunger? That is crazy! We have so many resources and yet our fellow citizens are going hungry? We have to put and end to that situation or at least make a huge dent in the problem.
For the 14th year, the Campbell Soup Company and the United States Postal Service are teaming together with the National Association of Letter Carriers to co-sponsor Stamp Out Hunger.
Stamp Out Hunger™ is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Last year, over 70 million pounds of food were donated to food banks. Join in the fight to end hunger on Saturday, May 10, 2008, by leaving non-perishable food donations in a bag next to your mailbox for your letter carrier. It is that simple. The next time you do your grocery shopping, pick up an extra can of green beans and another can of corn and donate it. You don’t even have to deliver it.
