The Flattest Continent
We saw the movie Australia last night. It was an awesome movie. I had no idea that the terrain was so different there. The red and orange cliffs remind me of New Mexico here in the US.
Australia is the smallest continent and has 21,262 miles of coastline. The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef, lies a short distance off the north-east coast and extends for over 1,240 miles. the largest part of Australia is desert or semi-arid lands commonly known as the outback. Australia is the flattest continent, with the oldest and least fertile soils, and is the driest inhabited continent.
The mountain shown in my picture, courtesy of Wikipedia, is Cradle Mountain. It is a distinctive mountain in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, Australia. Rising to 1,545 meters above sea level it is one of the principal tourist sites in Tasmania, owing to its natural beauty. The mountain is composed of dolerite columns, similar to many of the other mountains in the area.

I didn“t realise Australia was so flat. I knew it was pretty flat because you always see the long stretches of road on the television. I really would like to visit Australia.. or move there.. it seems like it would be a super and hot place to live!!!

I knew it was pretty much flat. I have a friend who lives there and also from a few movies I’ve seen that have been filmed there. It’s a nice place tho.
Australia is small but beautiful continent… i was once there, at my friends house, and we was on a tour to see Barrier Reef, there are no words to describe that, it’s more than beautiful

Australia is very flat once you get away from the east coast where most people live. Much of it is very remote and sparsely populated too. If you drive across the country, there are parts where its hundreds of km between towns and even between petrol stations.
I saw the movie “Australia” and it was ok, even if pretty corny in places. You might be interested to know that the place with the orange and black dome shaped rocks they drove the cattle through is called Purnululu, or alternatively the Bungle Bungles. It is an amazingly beautiful place. However there is no huge canyon near it like in the movie. That may have been Kings Canyon in central Australia. If so, they drove the cattle the long way to Darwin as those two places are more than 1000 km apart. Creative license I guess?

How interesting! I suppose they took creative license to make the movie, Ian. Do you live in Australia? I read your blog but I must have missed that.
you just reminded me that i wanted to watch that movie. i was about to but i got disappointed with the reviews. but if you think it’s good, there must be something commendable to it
