Renting a Car at Your Destination
I have been wondering something about rental cars. Perhaps you know the answer. When you rent a car, are you covered by your personal auto insurance? I need to check on the answer before we fly at the end of this month. I suppose that every insurance provider is different. I do not know. I suggest that you check your own insurance and READ the FINE PRINT on your policy and the card terms & conditions, so that there are no surprises.
I did a little research and came up with a few points to ponder concerning rental cars. Be careful about using your company’s contract number with a car rental. Often, your company’s contract ID is meant for business rentals and will include insurance coverage which may duplicate what you already have with your personal insurance.
Most Amex cards, and Visa/MasterCards (gold/platinum level) should include secondary insurance. Business MasterCard and Diners Club cards include primary car rental insurance.
I recommend checking with ebates.com before traveling. Their Enterprise coupon gives you a Free Upgrade On Your Next Airport Rental With Enterprise Rent-A-Car! They also offer 50% Off Weekend Rentals at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Check the Ebates website for details.

I’m not sure if it is the same in the USA, but in Europe the rental car is insured by the rental company. You are effectively a “named driver” on their insurance policy for how ever long you rent for.
I hope that this helps.
Happy Travelling
