I have been to Zermatt. I guess I was lucky to not have experienced altitude sickness while there. Yes, you and your sister were very lucky she decided to stay back that day.

Drinking was the main thing they warned against. Altitude sickness is not fun.

Great information! I went with a group to Tibet one time and one guy almost fainted as soon as we landed because of the altitude. Another had no symptoms for almost a week and then he needed oxygen tanks to get through a few days. Everyone reacts differently I guess.

Last year we went to Europe and decided to take a cable car to a mountain top near Zermatt.
My sister who had asthma said she would stay at home as she was tired.
My other sister and my mother and I went on the cable car and we were so glad our asthmatic sister did not come. We struggled with dizziness and light headaches, all three of us as we walked through the tunnels to open snow. It was the weirdest feeling. Now we have all been on mountain tops before and not suffered this but we were much much younger. I wonder if our age added to our discomfort. It could have been fatal for my other sister. I am so glad she stayed in our apartment.

I camped in Colorado at about 11,000 feet near a place called Climax! Then in the morning the van was suffering from altitude sickness and didn't want to start. We were all alone with a baby. It was a scary time.

FYI: While I am here today I thought that I would review your blog for inclusion in Day 87 of the 109 Day Link Building Explosion. It will post soon.

Just stay away from booze, drink lots of water, get plenty of rest and eat small meals. I hope you make it to Nepal some day.

Oh wow! That would have been terrible to miss a tour of the Grand Canyon. Altitude sickness is awful.

I had a friend that got this last year... when we both went on a vacation to the Grand Canyon... I wish we had known about the symptoms before... 'Cause the next morning we were supposed to go on a Mule Ride into the Canyon, and almost didn't because of the sickness.

When my son and I traveled to Breckenridge, I got a headache that never really went away. We walked a trail and I thought I was going to die before we got to the top. I was breathing like I was running miles instead of walking a trail.

I would add one piece of advice: Do not drink.
